Event Ticketing vs RSVP Systems: What's the Difference?
Ticketing and RSVP solve different problems. Here is how to choose the right one for your event, and why using the wrong one creates friction.
“Ticketing” and “RSVP” are often used as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and picking the wrong one is a common reason events feel clunky. Here is the difference and how to choose.
What an RSVP is for
An RSVP simply asks an invited guest whether they will attend. It suits free, invitation-only events: a gala, a member networking evening, a private launch. You already have the guest list, so the job is to confirm numbers, capture dietary needs, and send reminders. There is no payment and usually no ticket to scan.
The strengths of an RSVP flow:
- Fast for the guest, often one click from an email.
- Accurate headcount for catering and seating.
- Light touch, no payment step to abandon.
What ticketing is for
Ticketing is for events where a place must be paid for or formally claimed, and where each attendee needs a unique, scannable ticket. It handles ticket tiers and pricing, takes or records payment, issues a QR code per attendee, and enforces capacity. Paid conferences, symposiums, and public events need ticketing, not an RSVP.
The strengths of ticketing:
- Real pricing tiers, for example member, non-member, and corporate table.
- Payment, or a reserve-now-pay-later flow with confirmation.
- A unique ticket per attendee for fast, fraud-resistant check-in.
A simple way to choose
| Question | RSVP | Ticketing |
|---|---|---|
| Is it free? | Yes | Often paid |
| Invitation-only? | Usually | Often open |
| Need payment? | No | Yes or reserve-and-confirm |
| Unique ticket per person? | No | Yes |
| Capacity limits per tier? | Rarely | Yes |
If you answered “paid” or “unique ticket” to any row, you need ticketing. If it is a free, invited gathering, an RSVP keeps things simple.
You often need both
Many organisations run both kinds of event through the year. The practical answer is one platform that does each properly, rather than bolting an RSVP onto a ticketing tool or vice versa. For associations specifically, where member and non-member pricing matters, see the best event registration software for associations. How CentreEvents handles it
